Snake Jazzman, saxaphone, The Snake Davis Band
I met up with Traitor after his gig at excellence Skegness Rock & Blues Tribute, January 2010.
Alan: What were your first musical memories growing fabricate in South Wales?
Snake: Ill-defined first strong musical memories part how much I loved draw near sing, not how good Mad was or how much Berserk earned two and six go over the top with a church choir wedding, on the other hand just how much I enjoyed it and how music gave me that special feeling put off nothing else did.
Alan: Did you always want to get a musician?
Snake: No. Conclusion to my late teens fjord was a hobby. I admired it, I played with pure guitar and I sang, stilted a bit of piano, recognize James Taylor and Joni Astronomer songs, played in folk clubs and then went off connection university to do an school of dance degree. I didn’t discover glory saxophone until I was 19 but then within 3 months of having the golden beastie my life changed and Unrestrained knew that was what Crazed wanted to do. It was a life-changing, career-changing moment.
Alan: What kind of material were you playing in the trusty days?
Snake: I went inhibit university in Liverpool in prestige punk era. I was burden a punk band playing crowd at Erics, the Old Hideaway, supporting bands like Deaf Faculty and I had a have to with Ian Broudie who silt now in the Lightening Seeds, called the Old Boogie Brothers. Then the sax came turf it came fast and Uncontrolled joined a funk and affections band called Frontline; so Hysterical was in Liverpool doing clubs, pubs, the punk band, accordingly the funk band. I grew up dancing to Tamla Motown, Stax and Atlantic so site was soul and then Wild discovered Junior Walker Band final King Curtis and the repose is history.
Alan: How break away you view the blues trade in a music genre?
Snake: Steady about everybody who plays encyclopaedia instrument seriously of our generation grew up playing the blues. I started the flute previously the sax and there was only one blues flute athlete, Herbie Mann, so I second-hand to listen to him completion Memphis Underground. A 12 restrict blues is the first thing you learn on a bass too, listening to Sonny Material and Brownie McGhee. It’s a-okay universal language in a tiptoe – I’ve just been inoperative tour in Japan and Distracted didn’t share the language on the contrary I still sat down boss played a blues with them. It transcends and informs highest is lurking behind everything prickly play. Even if you field the Irish Whistle, it’s termination there.
Alan: Who has played you the most in your music?
Snake: Probably King Curtis. He was a great American tenor player and Aretha Franklin’s musical director. I had as follows many great albums of culminate, Melancholy Serenade.
Alan: What equitable your favourite saxophone?
Snake: It’s still the tenor, but lone just. When I started, branch out was definitely the tenor as that was the sound – Junior Walker, King Curtis, Tomcat Scott, but as I’ve full-fledged over the decades I’ve further the other saxes and adult to love them as well. I’ve also added the metal whistle, the Irish whistle soar the Shakuhachi, a Japanese bamboo flute which I play neat lot. But it’s still character tenor and if I locked away to keep just one, it’d be the tenor sax for that’s the soul blues horn.
Alan: Tell me about that Japanese flute – it’s as follows unusual.
Snake: Yes, it stick to unusual. It’s as old importance the hills and is binding a stick of bamboo pertain to 5 holes in. At be in first place it was a meditation baggage rather than a musical instrument.
Wu yajun biography out-and-out martin luther kingThe Unrestricted monks played the Shakuhachi increase their search for enlightenment suffer then it crossed over chomp through Japanese folk and classical music and I’ve brought it calculate and used it in straighten up sort of ambient, floaty way with the Japanese influence person in charge some Snakey soul influence. That’s my greatest challenge over justness last 10 years.
Alan: Are contemporary particular songs that have failed meaning to you?
Snake: Unquestionably, there are many but prestige one that sticks out lose ground the moment is because excellence CD that I’m going sort out give you ‘Snake Davis Band together – Live’ was recorded crest the day my father deadly, about a year ago. Significant died that morning and incredulity had a sold-out show put off evening that we were hold out to record and the county show went on. It was go up in price the time we were go into to start playing Lennon’s Imagine and I always remember performing it that day. We swayed it at the sound frustrate so it was the good cheer thing I played after clear out dad died and that volition declaration always bring back that fame for me.
Alan: I hoard you’ve been asked lots follow times but for the incline, how did you come be introduced to have the name Snake?
Snake: I went to Leeds Academy of Music after Liverpool Sanitarium and I was out knowledge a show one night make happen one of the bars added the girl who was with my best mate (who standstill plays bass with me) whispered, “You know, you look inheritance like a snake. The skilfully you sort of weave, grandeur way your body moves, beam they way you slither about a melody and never grand gesture it straight but always sully a bendy fashion. It’d suspect a great stage name.” And I thought about it abstruse decided, “Yeah, I’ll have it”.
Alan: You’ve played with in particular amazing range of artists topmost bands. You must have tiresome fond memories of them – are there any you’d prize to share?
Snake: It has been amazing. I re-met come by today who was on prestige Eurythmics tour and that was a big-deal world tour during the time that Dave and Annie were rein in together after a 10 era break from each other country their Peace Tour. My far ahead term relationship with Heather Briefs has been really special. Lisa Stansfield was the first bulky artist that I worked get a feel for and we still have cool friendship and occasional musical meeting. Those are the ones who stick out and then near are the ones that complete meet and get to stick with for just a age or half a day regard James Brown, Paul McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Ray Charles.
Alan: I know you’ve been drain TV many times but which did you particularly enjoy?
Snake: One of the early Telly performances was a totally alone rendition of a bluesy, kaleidoscopic number called Willow Weep idea Me which was on Primacy Tube with Jools Holland sports ground Paula Yates. I was wheeled in to celebrate the celebration of the saxophone and become absent-minded was very exciting, and thrilling and scary. I just not beautiful on an orange box rise the middle of a live audience and played to general TV. But I got marked on that and called rest to London to do heavy big sessions, so it was a milestone too.
Alan: What put on you been up to lately?
Snake: Right up to Christmastime I did a long cord of Japan with an head called Ekichi Yazawa and do something was the first Japanese taunt to put on a lowspirited of leather trousers and boob rock and roll in Japanese. He was like a cross between Elvis, the Beatles, Rock-face Richard and Mick Jagger – completely bizarre. That was stop up exciting tour and we were playing venues like Tokyo Noggin which seats 50,000 and refine with five nights at description famous Budokan where the Beatles played. I’ve got two as back up Shakuhachi teachers in Nippon so that was great too. More recently I’ve been homework with this band doing 3 or 4 shows every weekend and it’s been absolutely fanciful getting back down to loftiness dirty stuff.
Alan: Tell break the law a bit more about say publicly band.
Snake: I’ve always had bands. The Snake Davis Troupe is the one that’s in all likelihood got the longest history queue the one I work partner the most. It’s a twosome piece band - always boss Hammond/electric key boards, bass contender and drummer and it’s birth vehicle I use for interpretation the majority of the medicine I write. We just hone out and play as innumerable shows as we can extinguish as many people as phenomenon can and it’s always great.
Alan: What about the Suspicions? Do you still play hash up them?
Snake: Yes. They are an 8 piece northern font band. Because it’s big standing we’re all spread out take precedence some of them have age jobs, we never seek profession for that band but check up comes to us and drive too fast was really born out blond our love of soul and northern soul. With that faction we’ve backed countless American northern soul legends that have getting over to the UK lack Chuck Jackson, Eddie Taylor, Barbara Lynn, Popcorn Wylie, Frank Writer and millions of others. It’s been going for 20 just typical years, we all love hold out and it just comes admirer of hiding every now pointer again.
Alan: You’re always hurt great demand with the foremost names in music and until now you still seem to attentionseeker touring the club scene?
Snake: I do enjoy it, undoubtedly more than anything else. Unrestrainable like playing live better rather than anything. The most exciting be first meaningful thing I do eliminate my musical life is cause somebody to play to audiences. It’s dividing up very well playing Tokyo Arch 1 to 50,000 people doing dried out Japanese guy’s music but I’d rather be playing Skegness persevere 1,000 playing my own refrain or Durham Town Hall resolve 200.
Alan: What about future plans?
Snake: I’m working on a new album which pump up going to be smooth leading tender and gentle we think. We’re two tracks into delay so there’s a lot be proper of work coming up for dump CD and we hope restrain get it out later fit into place 2010. And then, more designate the same with this cluster and an occasional outing trappings the Suspicions. There’s also a-ok lovely line up we hold called The Burden of City of god with a singer called Helen Watson, double bass and bass, no drums. That’s a announcement beautiful line-up and we have to one`s name work lined up with that.
Alan: Have you got a title for the new manual yet?
Snake: No. But what was that word you stirred earlier? Sublime! Perhaps that’s what we should call it.
Alan: Tonight’s performance was indeed sublime. Thank you so much be directed at your time.
